Researchers found a fragment of a juvenile cave bear’s femur, with two to four holes, at Divje Babe in Slovenia and dated it to about 43,000 years ago. They may have discovered the oldest flute; however, this has been disputed. In contrast, in 2008, researchers discovered a flute dated to at least 35,000 years ago in Hohle Fels cave near Ulm, Germany. Specifically, they created a five-holed flute with a V-shaped mouthpiece from a vulture wing bone. Subsequently, the researchers published the discovery in the journal Nature in August 2009. Moreover, researchers confirmed that it was the oldest musical instrument ever found; nevertheless, a redating of flutes found in Geißenklösterle cave revealed that the flutes are older, at 42,000 to 43,000 years.
The Hohle Fels flute is one of several that researchers found in the Hohle Fels cavern. Moreover, it is located next to the Venus of Hohle Fels and, in addition, a short distance from the oldest known human carving. Upon announcing the discovery, scientists suggested that, in fact, the finds demonstrate, indeed, the presence of a well-established musical tradition at the time when, consequently, modern humans colonized Europe.
An archaeologist found an 18.7 cm flute with three holes. Furthermore, archaeologists made it from a mammoth tusk and dated it to 30,000–37,000 years ago. Furthermore, excavators unearthed two flutes made from swan bones a decade earlier from the same cave; additionally, they dated them to about 36,000 years ago. This provides a basic history of the Flute.
